A610 Nuthall Road likely to remain closed until end of week for resurfacing

Nottingham City Council says emergency resurfacing work is continuing on A610 Nuthall Road after a diesel spillage caused significant damage to the carriageway.

The council’s highways teams said work is expected to continue this week, with the aim of reopening the road towards the end of the week.

The closure has caused disruption on one of the main routes into the city since last Wednesday, but the council said the extent of the damage meant a large amount of resurfacing work was needed before the road could safely reopen.

In an update, Nottingham City Council said: “We want the road to be open as soon as possible like everyone, but the level of damage means a large amount of work is required to get it safely and properly resurfaced.”

Highways teams have been assessing the damage, preparing detailed designs for contractors and calculating the amount of surfacing material needed.

The council said the area requiring resurfacing totals around 6,000 square metres, equivalent to about 64,000 square feet.

Crews have also been identifying and removing damaged sections of the road surface to the required depth. So far, 16 loads of material have been removed from the site.

The road then has to be reconstructed in stages, with large sections being rebuilt to a depth of around 10 centimetres. A binder course is being laid before the final surface course can be applied.

The council said the final layer, made up of 6,000 square metres of hot rolled asphalt, is due to start being laid tomorrow. This part of the work is expected to take around three to four days.

Drivers are being advised to continue avoiding the area and to allow extra time for journeys while the emergency works remain in place.
