Appeal after ‘silly string’ sprayed at bus driver’s face causing eye injury

Police are appealing for the public’s help after a bus driver was assaulted on a Nottingham street.

The bus driver was standing on a pavement in Angel Row when a hooded person kicked a bottle against his foot.

CCTV shows the bus driver kicking the bottle back, which prompted a second person to spray ‘Silly String’ into his face.

The product is propelled as a stream of liquid from an aerosol can. The solvent in the string quickly evaporates in mid-air, creating a continuous strand.

The incident left the bus driver with an eye injury that required treatment in hospital.

Our officers have been trying to trace the man in this image and are now appealing for the public’s help.

PC David Gray, of the City Centre neighbourhood team, said: “The offender most likely believed he was performing a harmless prank, but in reality, he left the bus driver with tissue scarring on his eye.

“Thankfully, he has made a full recovery with hospital treatment, but the incident resulted in him having to take a number of weeks off work while he recovered.

“We have reviewed CCTV and are confident the man in this image will be able to assist us with our inquiries into the incident.

“If you recognise him, please get in touch. We want the city centre to be a safe place for everyone, so it is important we speak to him about what happened.”

Anyone who recognises the person in the image is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 0438_06012025.
