Asda could open Carrington Street store this year

A supermarket chain is  closer to opening a store in Nottingham city centre and new details point towards this happening before the year is out.

Units facing the newly pedestrianised Carrington Street had been vacant for a number of years before Coffee#1 started the ball rolling with the opening of a café in December last year.

The same month, Asda confirmed it was planning to open a store in the remaining empty units under the car park and library building.

According to a licensing application, it will be an Asda Express convenience store.

Asda is asking for the premises licence to start on October 30, pointing to a possible opening before the end of the year.

Licensable activities include the sale of alcohol 24/7 from Monday to Sunday and late-night refreshment from Monday to Sunday between 11pm and 5am.

Nottingham City Council previously said an unnamed national retailer was interested in taking over all of the empty units; however, these plans never saw the light of day due to “unforeseen delays”.

Over the course of the five years that the units have been marketed, “under offer” and “to let” signs have been seen on the windows.

The smaller units were advertised with an annual rent of £28,500, whilst the larger ones come with an annual rent of £45,000.

Homes England purchased the Greater Broad Marsh site last year, and the government housing agency is currently in the process of demolishing the old NCP car park in Maid Marian Way.

The structure is expected to have been demolished by the end of November, paving the way for new homes, streets and public spaces.

The masterplan for the site includes around 1,000 new homes, alongside new workspaces and leisure and cultural spaces.
