A car thief has been jailed after city west officers tracked him down when he went on the run.
Warren Staniforth had been on a list of targets being pursued by the neighbourhood team for several weeks.
That’s after he stole a car from outside an address in Hanslope Crescent, Broxtowe, in the early hours of 26 November.
The vehicle was found later that same day in the Broxtowe area, although the person who stole it was nowhere to be seen.
Staniforth was forensically linked to the theft though, after leaving fingerprints on the car’s door handle and steering wheel.
The wanted man managed to evade police for multiple weeks, until last Thursday (15 January), when city west officers located him.
Hearing Staniforth was inside a Broxtowe property, officers visited it and spotted the thief as he was climbing through a broken window.
The 41-year-old was stopped and arrested shortly afterwards, but not before he’d assaulted two of the police officers in attendance.
Staniforth, of Bankwood Close, Aspley, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, assault with intent to resist arrest, and failing to surrender to police.
Having admitted to each offence, he was sentenced to six months in prison at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (16 January).
Sergeant Emma O’Meara, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Warren Staniforth has been on the radar of our policing teams for several weeks now, so we’re really pleased to see he’s been put behind bars.
“A lot of work went into tracking him down after he decided to steal a car, which we were thankfully able to return to its rightful owner.
“From forensically linking him to the theft, to tracking him down and arresting him, all the officers involved deserve great credit for securing this good result.
“Tackling vehicle crime is a policing priority for the neighbourhood team in Aspley as well, which makes the custodial sentence issued to a prolific offender like Staniforth even more pleasing.”
