Council proposes to keep Calverton and Redhill Leisure Centres

Gedling Borough Council has set out plans that would secure a positive future for Calverton and Redhill Leisure Centres, following consultation with residents and careful consideration of the council’s wider leisure portfolio.

A report to be considered by Cabinet on 26 March proposes that these leisure centres will continue to be operated by the Council, reflecting the feedback received from residents and the council’s commitment to maintaining valued local services.

The proposal comes as the council continues to modernise its leisure facilities across the borough, including the development of Carlton Active, which will replace ageing facilities with modern, energy-efficient spaces designed to serve communities for decades to come.

By taking a strategic approach to its leisure portfolio, by committing to the development of a new modern facility in Carlton and the financial sustainability this brings, the council is working to ensure that other centres such as in Calverton are protected for future years.  This supports the long-term health and wellbeing of local communities.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke MBE, said:

“We have listened carefully to residents, and I’m pleased that we are now able to propose that Calverton Leisure Centre will continue to be operated by the council.  We also remain committed to operate Redhill Leisure Centre while we consider future funding options for the development of brand new facilities in Arnold.

“Residents shared a wide range of views during the consultation and that feedback has helped inform the approach we are taking to our leisure services. By taking a sensible and forward-looking approach to our leisure portfolio, we can protect the facilities people value while ensuring they remain sustainable for the future.”

Portfolio Holder for Lifestyles, Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Henry Wheeler, said:

“This proposal shows the council is committed to protecting our sustainable leisure offer to local communities.  This is reflected further in the capital investment we are making at both Calverton and Redhill in 2026.

“This includes significant essential maintenance of the pool at Calverton to support its operation for years to come and a huge investment in new state of the art fitness equipment at Redhill making it the premium facility in the Arnold area.”

The council’s Cabinet will consider the report on 26 March, which follows the publication of Cabinet papers on 18 March.

If approved, the proposal would ensure that Calverton and Redhill Leisure Centres remain an important part of the borough’s leisure offer, alongside wider investment in modern and sustainable facilities.

The council thanked residents who took part in the consultation and shared their views on the future of leisure services in the borough.
