Nottinghamshire County Council releases statement after Wilko goes into administration.
The business was founded in Leicester and has its head office in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
Commenting on the news that retailer Wilko has gone into administration, Councillor Reg Adair, Deputy Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Asset Management said,
“This is really awful news and must be a very difficult time for employees and their families who of course will be worrying about the future of their jobs.
“Wilko is a much-loved Nottinghamshire-based retailer.
“It is the cornerstone of the local high street across Notts and many parts of the country and so those of us who have shopped there for years will be concerned about its future.
“We hope that better news is on its way and that there will be other opportunities for a buy-out to help save jobs and support our economy.
“We are already in discussions with Bassetlaw District Council, other partners and supporting agencies.
“As the situation evolves, we are keen to be ready to see what employment help and support can be offered as needed, particularly should the worst-case scenario happen.”
An advice portal for workers affected by the Wilko situation has been set up by the Citizens Advice Bassetlaw: www.bassetlawca.org.uk
