Councillor calls for Lime Bikes to stop cycles being dumped across West Bridgford

West Bridgford South County Councillor Jonathan Wheeler has called upon Lime Bikes to take action to stop the number of bikes being dumped across West Bridgford, blocking pavements and attracting anti-social behaviour.
Lime Bikes currently operate within the Nottingham City Council boundary and have multiple collection points where bikes can be dropped off properly.

In recent months, there has been an increase in bikes being dumped in West Bridgford, which has caused footpaths to be blocked, and bikes being set on fire and vandalised in public spaces.

Cllr Wheeler told The Wire:

“This needs to be stopped – the bikes should have technology to stop them being taken across the boundary easily, but it seems this is being bypassed. I am told of multiple bikes being found across West Bridgford, and I have spotted many myself.

“I have also heard of bikes being fished out of canals across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

“The bikes are not licensed to operate in West Bridgford. If they were, we would have the proper places for them to be stored. I know of visually impaired residents who have injured themselves tripping over them, children and dogs injured by sharp pieces from damaged bikes in public spaces, and anti-social behaviour involving people on the bikes around West Bridgford. Lime Bikes need to do more to stop this.”

“I have spoken to officers at Nottinghamshire County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council who are talking to Lime Bikes and officers at Nottingham City Council, but our powers are limited as to what we can do. This is on Lime Bikes to solve. I can only imagine the money it is costing them in damaged bikes, and bikes not being available for use as they are dumped in the wrong area.”
