Driver swerved across London Road with two flat tyres in suspected stolen car

Police stopped a car after observing it swerve across multiple lanes due to it having two flat tyres.

The Nissan Qashqai was pulled over in London Road, close to Notts County’s Meadow Lane stadium in Nottingham, after two officers in a marked police car spotted it being driven dangerously.

An inspection of the car found it had two deflated offside tyres, of which the front one was severely damaged to the point the rim was touching the carriageway.

Checks found the driver was uninsured and did not have a driving licence. The man said the car belonged to his cousin but failed to provide a name, raising suspicion that the car was stolen.

The 24-year-old was subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and driving a motor vehicle on a public road in a dangerous condition.

The arrest took place shortly before 2.20am on Thursday (10 April).

Superintendent Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was a great bit of work by the officers, whose attention was drawn to the vehicle by the loud noise of an alloy rim being dragged along the carriageway.

“The car was also swerving across multiple lanes and it was clear the driver was struggling to maintain control of the vehicle.

“The driver said he knew the vehicle had deflated tyres but that he only lived down the road and was driving it a short distance.

“No distance is acceptable when a vehicle is swerving across lanes on a busy road due to its poor condition.

“Likewise we will not tolerate anyone who drives without a valid licence or insurance. Such actions are against the law and put other road users at risk.

“The man was taken into custody for questioning and our inquiries to trace the owner of the vehicle are continuing.”
