Man stabbed woman nine times in ‘drunken attack’

A man who left a woman with stab wounds across her body in a drunken attack inside a house has been locked up.

Carl Quist had been at a party with the victim and their respective partners in Carrington when an argument broke out.

This escalated further when Quist lashed out at a door and damaged it – prompting his victim to repeatedly ask him to leave the address.

The 22-year-old refused before throwing a glass against a wall that narrowly missed the woman and then hit her multiple times with what she thought were punches.

Unbeknownst to his victim, Quist was actually holding a pair of scissors in his hand, which he used to stab the woman more than half a dozen times.

At that point, the attacker – who had been drinking heavily with his victim and their partners before the stabbing on 25 October 2024 – left the house and fled from the scene.

His victim, meanwhile, had to be taken to hospital to receive treatment for nine separate stab wounds, including six to her back.

She also sustained injuries to her neck, lip and shoulder during the attack.

While his victim was in hospital, Quist fled from the county, with police catching up with him a few days later in London.

Based on the strong evidence against him, he was left with no choice but to plead guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent when he appeared in court on 27 February.

Quist, of Ferry Road, Plymouth, returned to Nottingham Crown Court to be sentenced on Friday (23 May).

Handing the attacker an extended custodial sentence of eight-and-a-half years, Judge Robert Egbuna told him “it was sheer luck that the injuries you caused weren’t more serious”.

He was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison and will then spend a further three years on licence when he’s released.

Quist was also made the subject of a restraining order banning him from any further contact with the victim.

Detective Constable Hannah Wilson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Carl Quist should count himself extremely lucky his actions that morning didn’t result in him facing a murder charge.

“While we weren’t initially sure what the object he had in his hand was when he carried out this savage attack, Quist would’ve been fully aware he was holding a pair of scissors.

“He then knowingly used the weapon to stab his victim no less than nine separate times, including six times to her back.

“Thankfully for everyone involved, her injuries weren’t as serious as they could’ve been, although this shouldn’t take away from Quist’s crimes.

“His total disregard for the woman’s wellbeing was summed up by his decision to flee from the house and out of the county after doing what he did.

“We’re pleased to see that he has now been made to face the consequences of his actions, in the form of a lengthy spell in prison.”
