A man attempted to steal a large quantity of cash from behind a post office security screen by reaching through the letter gap with a long metal spoon.
Police say that the offender entered Hyson Green Post Office, in Gregory Boulevard, at around 11.45am on Saturday 10 February.
CCTV shows the 36-year-old approach a counter window at the back of the store, before reaching through a small gap at the bottom with a large serving spoon.
His actions were quickly spotted by staff, who activated the panic alarm – triggering the security smoke system.
As smoke filled the post office, Scott ran from the scene, at some point dropping his debit card bearing his name before leaving the area in a taxi.
Police recognised him from CCTV footage and he was arrested nine days later after patrolling officers spotted him in Forest Road West, Radford.
Scott, of Nottingham admitted the offence, telling officers he was suffering with his mental health and had taken cocaine and heroin shortly before the incident.
He was charged with attempted burglary and sentenced at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday last week (21 February) having pleaded guilty.
He was handed a community order comprising a six-month drug rehabilitation programme and fined £50.
Scott must also pay a £114 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
Sergeant Mark Southgate, of the City Central neighbourhood policing team, said:
“There was overwhelming evidence in this case and I am pleased Scott has been held to account for his actions.
“He told officers it was a stupid thing to do and I hope he now reflects on his behaviour and stays out of trouble.”
