New Basford: Burglar jailed after forcing his way into home and stealing cash

A Nottingham burglar who barged his way into a home to steal from a woman has been put behind bars.

Scott Newton forced his way into the property, in Eland Street, New Basford, on 18 December 2023.

He stole a purse containing more than £200 in cash from the victim, who was known to him, before fleeing from the scene.

The 45-year-old, of Nottingham, was jailed for 22 months when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on Tuesday (9 April).

He had earlier admitted burglary with intent to steal.

Newton had turned up at the woman’s home on numerous occasions asking for money in the months before the burglary took place.

She had placed a note on the door warning him she would call police if he attended.

Detective Constable Charlotte Webster, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The victim had repeatedly told Newton to keep away and the way he barged into her home must have been extremely upsetting for her.

“No one should be made to feel unsafe in their own home and the invasive element to any burglary makes it a particularly unpleasant crime.

“I’m pleased Newton has now been jailed and hope the victim is at least provided with some comfort from this.”
