Nottingham attacks: Public inquiry formally announced in Parliament

The Government has announced a full public inquiry into the circumstances of the Nottingham attacks.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood officially confirmed the move in Parliament on Tuesday (April 22), stating that the inquiry will have legal powers to compel witnesses to give evidence.

The families of the victims described the decision as a “watershed” moment, expressing confidence that it would ensure transparency and accountability.

In June 2023, Valdo Calocane, a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, stabbed 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar as they returned from a night out in Nottingham city centre. The same night, he fatally attacked 65-year-old school caretaker Ian Coates.

After killing Mr. Coates, Calocane stole his van and used it to seriously injure three pedestrians—Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski, and Sharon Miller.

Since the attacks, the victims’ families have campaigned for a statutory inquiry with legal authority to summon witnesses and demand evidence regarding the events leading up to the tragedy.
