Nottingham taxi driver murder: Three arrests in Wollaton, Beeston and Nottingham

Already the father of a five-year-old son, he was killed just five months before his baby daughter was born.

Officers have arrested another three people in connection with the murder of a Nottingham taxi driver.

Police carried out the arrests on the morning of Wednesday, 5 February, at a number of locations across the city and county.

A dedicated team of detectives has been following a number of lines of inquiry and forensic opportunities since relaunching the murder investigation last year.

Ethsham Ul-Haq Ghafoor, aged 26, of Sherwood Rise, known to his friends and family as Shami, was shot dead in his taxi on Tuesday, 22 November 1994.

He was found by a milkman at 4:30 am at Lambley Lane Playing Fields in Gedling, with his hands tied and bound to the steering wheel.

He had been shot in what has been described by police as “an execution.”

Shami was described by his family as “an outgoing, charming, and kind man.”

Police visited three properties in the Nottingham, Wollaton, and Beeston areas on the morning of Wednesday, 5 February.

Three men, aged 58, 57, and 55, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

So far, police have arrested nine people in connection with Shami’s murder. His family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.

Chief Inspector Clare Dean, who is leading the investigation, said:

“We made a commitment to Shami’s family that we would leave no stone unturned when we relaunched the investigation last year.

“We continue to follow all new and existing lines of inquiry to ensure that his family gets the answers they have waited for.

“Today, we have arrested three men on suspicion of murder, and they remain in police custody.”

Crimestoppers, a charity independent of the police, has supported this investigation by offering a reward of up to £50,000 for information they exclusively receive that leads to a conviction. The reward is still available.

Chief Inspector Dean added:

“We would like to personally thank the community for all of their help and assistance so far, as well as the media for sharing our appeal for information.

“It is never too late to come forward with information. It could be that the information you have, no matter how small, is vital to our investigation.

“Crimestoppers is still offering a reward of up to £50,000 as an extra incentive. Information to Crimestoppers can be submitted completely anonymously.”
