Nottinghamshire Platinum Jubilee: Events across Gedling – Gedling Borough Council will be joining the nation in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s historic 70 year reign, by hosting a series of events in Gedling as part of the four day UK bank holiday weekend from June 2-5. The celebrations will include a beacon lighting, Jubilee fair and a big community lunch.

Beacon Lighting, Thursday 2 June

Gedling Country Park will be hosting a Beacon Lighting on the evening of Thursday 2 June. There will be entertainment from the Carlton Brass Band, performing outside Café 1899 from 8pm, followed by the beacon being lit at 9.45pm.

You can make a lantern in advance and bring it along to the beacon lighting event! FREE lantern-making kits are available from Café 1899 at Gedling Country Park and Gedling Borough Council’s Civic Centre in Arnot Hill Park from Friday 20 May.

Please be advised that the path to the beacon is uneven in places, so appropriate footwear is required. The path to the beacon will be lit, but please feel free to bring your own torch. Café 1899 is open from 9am – 9pm (serving from the hatch only from 7.30pm). The toilets will be open until 10.30pm. Please note there is limited car parking available on site.

The Queen’s Green Canopy, Friday 3 June

Gedling Country Park will be taking part in The Queen’s Green Canopy by hosting a community tree planting session at 2pm on Friday 3 June. 30 trees will be planted by local schoolchildren and community groups and will form the park’s newly named, The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Memorial Woodland.

Café 1899 will be serving a Jubilee themed menu in the afternoon and there will be FREE craft activities, provided by Gedling Play Forum, taking place near to the park’s play areas from 1-4pm (no need to book, just come along and join in).

The Queen’s Jubilee Fair, Saturday 4 June

The Queen’s Jubilee Fair will take place at Arnot Hill Park on Saturday 4 June, from 11am to 5pm. The fair will showcase performances from local choirs, schools and artists. There will also be exciting activities and workshops taking place around the park for all ages, as well as a host of charity and information stalls and multicultural food and drink sellers.

We encourage local charities and community groups to have a stand at this flagship event to raise funds or promote their services. If organisations are interested in having a stall as a food trader or charity/community group, please email community@gedling.gov.uk

The Big Jubilee Lunch, Sunday 5 June

To finish off the Jubilee celebrations, King George V Recreation Ground will be hosting a Big Lunch on Sunday 5 June from 12pm – 4pm. Bring a picnic and join Gedling Play Forum in celebrating ’70 Years of Play’ with some free play activities.

Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts – cinema screenings

Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts is a unique and inventive feature documentary about the life of Queen Elizabeth II. The Bonington Theatre in Arnold is showing the documentary film on the following dates:

  • 23 May, 7.30pm, Wednesday 25 May, 1.30pm (Special preview screenings, with a pre-recorded Q&A session shown straight after the film.)
  • Saturday 4 June , Thursday 7 June 1.30pm (Documentary only, no Q&A.)

Street parties

The UK has a long history of holding street parties to celebrate significant national events. You can organise a street party for you and your neighbours without requiring a licence.

Funding

Communities across the country are being offered the chance to apply for funding from the National Lottery to help celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.

The various funding options available (external link) are detailed on the official Platinum Jubilee website include the Community Fund, Art Council England funding and funding available to apply from the National Lottery Project Grants programme.
