A 36-year-old man has been jailed after being stopped by an off-duty police officer following a shoplifting incident in Newark.
Shamus Doyle, of no fixed address, admitted two charges of shop theft at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday 19 January. He was sentenced to 28 days in custody and ordered to pay compensation.
The incident happened on Sunday 18 January at the Marks and Spencer store in North Gate, Newark. An off-duty neighbourhood police sergeant recognised an individual believed to be involved in shoplifting and contacted police before following two men into the store. One of the men left the store, while Doyle filled a basket with meat products valued at hundreds of pounds and attempted to leave without paying. He was stopped by the officer and detained until on-duty officers arrived.
Police later linked Doyle to a separate shop theft in Worksop.
Inspector Charlotte Ellam, district commander for Newark and Sherwood, said the incident reflected ongoing efforts to address shoplifting and related offences in the area, including the use of non-uniformed patrols.
