Residents say they are shocked to learn that Nottinghamshire County Council plans mean that the West Bridgford Recycling Centre will close.
The council plan to open a new “Super site” within a 20 minute drive before the West Bridgford centre is closed but many locals are not happy with this situation and have started a petition to Save the Recycling Centre.
Local Green Party activist, and former borough councilllor, Ben Gray started the petition, and within 24 hours it reached 1000 signatures.
Local residents and groups have shared and commented on the plans. The petition asks that the site remains open and its running is improved by the return of peak time booking, and improved kerbside recycling for things like glass, cardboard, and bulky items.

Councillors Richard and Sue Mallender visited the site this week to support the petition. Richard Mallender said:
“Closing this site will make it even harder for local people to recycle more, what we need to be doing is lowering the barriers that stop people recycling, like allowing people to drop off on foot or by bike. Not moving the site further away from where people live”

People have commented that the new plan will lead to fewer people recycling and more people flytipping due to the longer journey times. The current site does cause traffic issues due to its popularity at weekends and bank holidays, but reintroduction of a booking system at peak times could solve this problem.
Ben Gray said:
“Taking the centre out of our community would be a real loss. I understand it would save money for the council, but that cost would fall back on us as we need to make longer journeys and probably join even bigger queues at the new site.

“The council need to look at the environmental and economic impact this will have on residents. I hope the council take notice of the petition and we can save the site.”
The petition will be delivered to the county council at their next full meeting, and is just the start of the campaign.
