Police Dog detains suspect after pursuit

A police dog jumped from a patrol car before chasing down and detaining a fleeing suspect.

PD Rocket, a three-year-old Belgian Malinois, was on patrol with his handler when a vehicle failed to stop for officers at about 1.30am on Wednesday 11 June.

During the following pursuit, the offending vehicle was driven at high speeds through residential areas – before losing control and crashing into a parked car in Carlton Road.

Two people were seen to flee the vehicle, and two suspects were detained a short time later.

One of the suspects, a 22-year-old man, was detained by PD Rocket after his handler deployed him from his car.

He and two other men, aged 22 and 21, were detained on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

The youngest man was also detained on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

The vehicle was pursued and stopped by expert police drivers from the Operational Support Team.

Inspector Chris Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, explained:

“This was an appalling display of driving that put people’s lives in danger.

“When we pursue speeding and dangerous drivers in this way, our primary concern is always for the safety of the general public and all those involved in the pursuit.

“This is a concern we weigh continuously against the seriousness of the offences reported and the potential danger posed by people should they get away.

“Thanks to the professionalism and training of all the officers and control room staff involved, this incident was resolved without serious injury and three suspects were detained at the scene.

“An investigation into what happened is ongoing.”
