Police praise members of public who helped distressed person on railway lines

Officers would like to praise the heroic actions of two members of the public who talked a distressed man off the railway lines.

The incident happened just before 2pm on Saturday 5 April at a level crossing in Attenborough.

The two women noticed the distressed man on the railway lines and started to build a rapport with him while emergency services were called.

Due to their compassion, the man decided to listen to their instructions and come off the tracks. He then sat in one of their gardens before police arrived.

Inspector Alice Bartle said: “I would like to recognise the quick-thinking actions of two members of the public when they saw a man in distress on the railway lines.

“I am in no doubt if these two women were not there then the outcome could have been very different.

“It was due to their compassion that they have essentially saved a man’s life.

“Both were able to build a rapport with him and keep him safe and calm until police arrived. They were very kind to him and brave in their actions. I would just like to personally thank them.”
