Police seize machete and imitation firearm after Nottingham city centre car stop

A sighting of a suspected drug deal allowed specialist officers to seize knives, an imitation firearm and a bundle of heroin and cocaine.

Members of the force’s knife crime team were on a plain clothes patrol in Nottingham city centre when they spotted the suspicious activity in an underpass off Booth Close at 11.40am on Tuesday (29 July).

A man was observed approaching a group of suspected drug users before getting into a taxi.

After this information was relayed to other members of the team the taxi was stopped moments later in nearby Curzon Place.

A suspect was detained and during searches wraps of Class A drugs, Class B drugs, a lock knife and multiple mobile phones were recovered from a bag.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place, possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and possession of cannabis.

Further searches then took place at an address linked to the suspect and more Class A drugs, drug paraphernalia, a machete, another large knife and an imitation firearm were recovered.

Police Constable Dan Cresswell, of the knife crime team, said:

“This incident illustrates the team work involved in all our proactive patrols.

“Officers in plain clothes observed this suspected drug deal and were able to pass on the information needed to other members of the team in a patrol car.

“When we then pulled over the taxi and carried out searches we were able to arrest a suspect and recover drugs and a knife.

“Further investigations then led to the search of a property in which more weapons and drugs were seized and taken out of harm’s way.”
