Temperatures are expected to return closer to average this week, bringing largely settled conditions for many parts of the UK before warmer weather builds again towards the weekend.
The Met Office says the early part of the week will feel more comfortable after last week’s heat, with daytime temperatures widely in the low to mid-20s°C.
Next week temperatures in Nottinghamshire are forecast in the high 20s and up to 30˚C into the following week.
Neil Armstrong, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: “With last week’s heat behind us, there will be much relief for many this week as we are forecasting a pleasant week of summer with temperatures in the low to mid 20s°C for many.”
From Tuesday and into midweek, conditions are expected to become more changeable.
Showers or longer spells of rain are forecast, with the wettest and most frequent outbreaks likely in northern and western areas.
The south and southeast are expected to remain mostly drier and often warm. Some showers on Tuesday could turn thundery, and the Met Office says there is potential for a thunderstorm warning to be issued.
Towards the weekend, high pressure is forecast to build across most of the UK as it extends from the Azores. This is expected to bring more settled, warm or very warm conditions for many, particularly across England and Wales, although some rain may still affect the far north.
Tony Wisson, Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, said: “Toward the weekend, high pressure will continue to build in across most of the UK as it extends from the Azores. This will lead to more settled, warm or very warm conditions for many, especially across England and Wales, though some rain may still affect the far north.”
Temperatures could approach the high 20s°C in parts of England by the weekend, with 30°C possible in parts of the southeast. Wales could also see temperatures in the mid to high 20s°C.
Mr Wisson added: “Although a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low.”
The Met Office has also issued an update on last week’s June temperature record.
It had previously reported a provisional UK June record of 37.3°C at Santon Downham in Suffolk on Friday. However, an update received over the weekend showed that Lingwood in Norfolk recorded 37.7°C on the same day.
The reading remains subject to verification, but if confirmed it would become the new UK June temperature record.
