Man charged after A46 crash that followed police pursuit

A 26-year-old man has been charged after a serious collision on the A46 which police said followed a pursuit.

Niks Rogacs, of Leicester, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, and using a motor vehicle on a road or public place without third party insurance.

He is due to appear at Leicester Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday 30 June.

The charges relate to a collision on Monday morning, 29 June, involving a Mercedes van and a BMW 1 Series.

Police said yesterday that the collision happened after a Mercedes van was seen travelling from the M1 onto the A46 on the wrong side of the carriageway at around 4.40am.

The van then collided with a BMW 1 Series.

The driver of the BMW was taken to hospital and remains there in a stable condition.

Following the collision, Leicestershire Police’s Professional Standards Department was informed because of the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The force said the matter has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The A46 was closed following the collision while emergency services attended the scene and investigations were carried out.
