Work on two junctions on the A52 in West Bridgford is set to begin next month.
From 7 September, utilities and telecoms companies will start to divert their infrastructure to enable National Highways to begin construction at the Wheatcroft and Nottingham Knight junctions.
- From Monday 7 September, works starts at the Wheatcroft roundabout for three months with overnight closures in place from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday.
- From 8am on Monday 21 September to 6pm on Friday 25 September there will be a full closure of a section of Flawforth Lane where it meets the A52.
- Overnight closures will also be needed over one weekend from Friday 25 September until Monday 28 September. On these nights, part of the A52 Gamston Link Road will be closed from 8pm to 6am the following morning.
- Utility companies are due to begin their work at Nottingham Knight island in November, lasting for four months.
- Throughout the works there will be lane closures along the A52 and a reduced speed limit of 40 mph to allow for safe working spaces for the workforce and to ensure the safety of road users.
The A52 is an important east-west link across the East Midlands which experiences congestion due to capacity issues at certain junctions, resulting in significant queuing and delays.
The A52 Nottingham Junctions scheme has been improving key junctions to reduce congestion since 2021, with the added aims of enhancing safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, and unlocking local economic growth and regional housing development.
Work to upgrade smaller junctions has already been completed at Bingham, Gamston, Silverdale and Stragglethorpe.
Once the advance works are complete, major construction will begin on the two remaining junctions, which will see their layouts changed, with a cut-through installed in the middle of the islands connecting the A52. The work aims to reduce journey times and allow for a more free-flowing A52 carriageway.
Other work includes installing new traffic signals and improving pedestrian and cycling routes with new crossings.
National Highways’ Project Manager, Adam Gallis, said:
“Work we have already completed on the A52 through Nottinghamshire has had a positive impact on reducing congestion and keeping everyone moving through the county. We’re now ready to start the final phase of the project to upgrade the remaining two roundabouts, which will further improve commuter journeys and remove the bottleneck at these junctions.
“The new design of the junctions will create much-needed additional capacity, better connectivity and safer journeys for the thousands of drivers using this key route each day.”
Griffiths Farrans Joint Venture is the contractor delivering the scheme for National Highways, with the main construction expected to start in early 2027 and last until spring 2029.
