Drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys if travelling into Nottingham as the popular Lexus Nottingham Open gets under way this weekend.
National Highways are expecting city roads to be busy when the competition opens on Saturday (14 June) at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre. It continues until Sunday 22 June.
Visitors are reminded that a large improvements scheme is under way along the nearby A52 Derby Road between the Priory and QMC roundabouts with the westbound carriageway currently closed to all vehicles.
There is a one-way system for eastbound traffic heading towards Nottingham. Westbound traffic follows a signed diversion route via Dunkirk Island, University Boulevard and Woodside Road.
The influx of visitors to the tennis centre, the largest public centre in Great Britain with some 40 courts, is likely to increase congestion in the area, particularly along the diversion route, and add to journey times.
Taking place between Priory roundabout and the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) roundabout, the improvements scheme will resurface the carriageway, which is coming to the end of its working life, making journeys safer and smoother for drivers.

Parts of the ageing drainage system will be rebuilt to help tackle issues with flooding and cope with the strain of increased heavy rain and the impact of climate change.
A new pathway for cyclists and pedestrians – part of National Highway’s commitment to encourage healthy and sustainable travel – will offer safe access to such amenities as Wollaton Park and the University of Nottingham, and low carbon commutes to sites such as QMC and the city centre.
In addition, ‘keep clear’ markings and other additional signage will be introduced to better enable access from local roads and to make directions clearer for all drivers using this stretch of road.
