Police have confirmed that two trains were involved in a crash in the Bedford area.
Health and Social Care secretary James Murray said at 7:50 pm
‘I am being kept updated on the collision of two trains between Luton and Bedford. A number of people have been injured and I thank first responders who are helping those affected.’
East of England Ambulance Service said:
‘We have sent a number of resources, including air ambulance and our Hazardous Area Response Team, to a major incident on the railway south of Bedford. We encourage people to avoid the area.
‘Further updates will be provided in due course. Please only call 999 in an emergency.’
Emergency services, including firefighters and police officers, are at the scene just south of Bedford.
Rail operator Thameslink said all lines between Luton and Bedford are currently blocked because of a “problem under investigation”.
Passengers on other trains which have stopped nearby have been told to remain on board while the incident is dealt with.
Disruption is expected on services through the area while emergency crews respond and the railway is assessed.

‘We’re responding to reports of a collision involving two trains in the Bedford area.
We’ll share more information as soon as possible.’
East Midlands Railway said:
‘Emergency services are dealing with an incident between London St Pancras and Leicester and is disrupting our trains on the London St Pancras/Nottingham/Sheffield and London St Pancras/Corby routes.
‘Network Rail and emergency services are on site.
‘Trains are unable to run in or out on London St Pancras for the remainder of this evening.
Passenger are advised DO NOT TRAVEL.’
