East Midland Airport’s passenger numbers continue to improve and at 3.9 million so far this year, are well on track towards a return to pre-pandemic levels of more than 4 million by the end of March.
The 24% increase in passengers travelling through EMA compared with last December shows a surge in popularity for winter breaks, adding to a strong summer performance in 2023.
It also reflects EMA attracting passengers from a wider catchment including South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire and the whole of the Midlands, as people are prepared to travel further to benefit from the swift and easy experience the airport is known for.
The ski season is currently in full swing and with Geneva, Chambery and Salzburg to choose from as gateways to the Alps from EMA, there are plenty of options flying with Tui or Jet2.com. February half-term will provide the next mini-peak, before the Easter holidays prepare the way for another busy summer.
EMA’s Managing Director Steve Griffiths said: “2024 is getting off to a flying start, with really positive news on the numbers of people choosing East Midlands Airport for their European breaks. We know ease and convenience are what attract people to EMA and we’re completely focused on making sure that remains the case.
“As well as offering lots of low-cost options from the heart of the UK, this year we’re starting on a significant investment programme which will make the experience of flying from EMA even more effortless and enjoyable.”
