A man has been jailed after viciously attacking a stranger and robbing him as he lay injured.
Brendon O’Grady attacked his victim – leaving him with a bleed on the brain – by kicking and punching him multiple times and then took his phone and wallet.
He punched the victim several times, causing him to fall to the floor, after spotting him walking along Windsor Road, Mansfield, and demanding his money and wallet at around 11.05pm on 2 November 2020.
O’Grady then carried on punching and kicking the 55-year-old victim before walking off.
But only seconds later he returned to go through the man’s pockets and take his phone and wallet, punch him one last time, and walk away.
O’Grady was arrested hours later after officers spotted a man matching his description walking close to a police station.
The 34-year-old, of no fixed address, admitted robbery and was sentenced to three years in prison when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on 10 November.
Detective Constable Nathan Bingham, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on the victim which not only injured him physically but no doubt also affected him emotionally and left him with a bleed on the brain.
“Thankfully officers were able to act quickly in detaining O’Grady for his actions after spotting him near a police station.
“We welcome the court’s sentence and hope that his time in prison will give him chance to think about his actions and both the physical and emotional impact the robbery has had on his victim.
“Behaviour like this will not be tolerated and we will always do everything we can to find anyone involved in incidents like this who pose a risk to people’s safety and bring them before the courts to seek justice for victims.”
