A man has been jailed for nearly 20 years after attempting to murder his mother during an attack at their home in Newthorpe.
Lee Bates, 52, assaulted the 81-year-old woman at a property in Mill Road on 6 June this year while heavily intoxicated. Nottingham Crown Court heard he pushed her to the floor, stamped on her neck and caused her to lose consciousness.
Bates called 999 following the incident. Emergency services found the victim in the hallway with a slash wound to her throat and a crushed trachea. Armed police arrested Bates at the address while paramedics treated the woman, who had adopted him in the 1970s after the death of his birth mother.
Ambulance staff witnessed Bates washing a bloodied knife in a kitchen sink shortly before his arrest. He was later charged with attempted murder and gave no comment during two police interviews.

Bates pleaded guilty on 2 October. At a sentencing hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday 23 January, he was jailed for 19 years and eight months.
The victim was left in hospital for three weeks and continues to experience ongoing pain and discomfort, the court heard.
Detective Inspector James Oakton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said the victim had suffered serious injuries and that the incident had had a significant impact on her.
