New spectator stands proposed for Worksop Town FC

Worksop Town Football Club has submitted plans to Bassetlaw District Council for new spectator stands and turnstiles at its Windsor Foodservice Stadium in Sandy Lane, Worksop.

The ground opened in 1994 as the new home for Worksop Town FC after it left its former home at the Central Avenue ground. It also serves as a community venue that supports youth development and other events.

The Tigers compete in the Enterprise National League North following their promotion in the 2024/25 season.

Planning documents say that, to meet legal requirements and “enhance the matchday experience”, the club is now looking to improve its facilities.

Four new tiered stands could be installed at the ground to increase the number of covered seats and standing, along with two new turnstiles to encourage “better crowd management” if plans are approved. Similar stands have featured at the club in the past.

Documents say Worksop Town FC does not expect a significant increase in its regular attendance from the proposals, with average home attendances around 800–900 during the 2024/25 season.

The highest recorded attendance during the season was 2,032 during the Premier Division play-off final, which plans say indicates “growing community interest and the club’s strong performance”.

Documents say: “Improvements to the stadium will allow the club to offer more opportunities for community engagement. Worksop Town FC is deeply committed to supporting local youth through a variety of youth and grassroots programmes which provide training and development opportunities for young people.

“The improved facilities will enable the club to host more community events, charity functions and youth football programmes, further strengthening the stadium’s role as a focal point for local engagement.”

It is claimed the club was founded in 1861 – the year before Notts County Football Club – making it one of the oldest clubs in England and the fourth oldest in the world, though there is no contemporary evidence for this claim.

The application is due to go to consultation in January and will be decided by the council at a later stage.
