Nottingham: Police patrol canal towpath after two sexual assaults and an attack in just four weeks

Police patrols are continuing as detectives investigate an assault along a canal towpath.

A homeless man in his 40s was taken to hospital after he was attacked along a canal path near the London Road bridge in Nottingham city centre at 9am on Thursday (17 July).

He sustained injuries to his head and arm and has since been discharged.

Detectives are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry and are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

It comes weeks after two sexual assaults were reported in the same area and officers are maintaining a high-visibility presence in the area to provide reassurance to the public and deter crime.

Superintendent Chris Pearson, Area Commander for the City Division, said:

“Our neighbourhood policing team for the city centre continue to carry out routine patrols around our canal towpaths as part of their policing activity.

“This is both uniformed and plain-clothed patrols.

“Nottingham City Council has also just appointed a security team who are carrying out extra patrols around the canals at weekends.

“Violence against women and girls is a force priority and we will continue to work with our partners to improve the safety of our canal network.

“From a police perspective, the first incident on 20 June in an alleyway near Canal Street has resulted in a man being charged with a number of offences including rape and sexual assault.

“We cannot go into any further details about this incident as court proceedings are active.

“The second sexual assault happened on 6 July between Trent Street and Carrington Street and the investigation is moving at speed.”

Anyone who saw yesterday’s attack on the homeless man is asked to call us on 101, quoting incident 145 of 17 July 2025.
