William Booth Primary and Nursery School in Sneinton, Nottingham, has been praised for its high level of pupil care, particularly around inclusion and tailored learning, in its latest Ofsted inspection.
The report showed that the school achieved ‘Expected Standard’ across all categories, with particular mention of engagement and attendance, high expectations for behaviour, and a strong emphasis on inclusion for every child.
From the earliest years, children are supported to develop rich vocabulary and secure early foundational skills. High-quality interactions and rich language experiences help children get off to a flying start. “As pupils progress through the different year groups, they develop the knowledge and skills they need to be successful across the wider curriculum. Pupils are well prepared for the next stage in their education.”
The report states: “Leaders know and understand their pupils and the context of the community the school serves. The school’s high expectations for behaviour are effectively communicated to staff, parents and carers, and pupils. Pupils respond to these expectations and are polite, kind and respectful of each other. Leaders have adopted an ambitious, broad and balanced, well-sequenced curriculum that provides pupils with the knowledge that they need for their next steps.”
“There is much for us to celebrate,” said Headteacher Claire Paparozzi. “Our wonderful school provides a nurturing setting where our children are looked after, with each pupil well known to us, allowing everyone to thrive. The school is very much part of the local community within Sneinton, and the support of our families is key to our positive, encouraging environment.”
Each Ofsted report includes a section entitled ‘What it’s like to be a pupil at this school’, which gives valuable insight from a pupil’s perspective and is reflected in the inspector’s findings. The school’s leadership team is rightly proud of the comments:
“Every pupil is well known and lovingly cared for by staff at this very inclusive school.”
“Children get off to a very positive start in Nursery and Reception. Teachers prioritise language and communication skills with the youngest children.”
“Staff understand pupils’ individual circumstances and any barriers to learning they may have. Highly effective provision is made to address these barriers and provide well for pupils’ needs.”
“Many parents and carers are proud that their child attends this hidden gem of a school.”
“Pupils are happy at school and, as a result, attend well. They are kept safe and are warmly welcomed by committed staff whom they like and respect.”
“A range of opportunities and experiences helps pupils develop their talents and interests and broaden their horizons.”
The Ofsted inspector made significant mention of children successfully following the curriculum, with impressive levels of additional, individual support for those who need it. The report states: “Pupils who find learning the hardest benefit from high-quality teaching that is well adapted to meet their needs. Staff implement the extensive training and advice they receive from local authority specialist teams well.”
The Ofsted report also celebrates the school’s approach to reward and motivation systems; clubs and extra-curricular provision; social skills; pastoral support; creativity; and music. “We seek to create a balanced provision for all aspects of school life, helping each child to discover new experiences and develop confidence in a number of areas,” said Mrs Paparozzi.
Leadership is described as principled, strategic and unwaveringly focused on pupils’ best interests. Governors know the school well and provide effective support and challenge. Trust leaders offer high-quality oversight and development opportunities that contribute significantly to school improvement.
William Booth Primary and Nursery School is part of Transform Trust’s wider group of schools and is well supported at every stage of its development. “We are delighted to see William Booth continue to demonstrate its strong values — ‘Believe to achieve’ — in line with the ambitions we all share for all children, and we are so proud of our staff, parents and carers, and all of the children.
