Update on Lincolnshire’s major highways projects

Work is under way on several major highways projects across Lincolnshire, with plans being drawn up for future ones.

These include major new roads in the Lincoln and Grantham areas, as well as smaller projects designed to revitalise and protect highways.

Here are Lincolnshire County Council’s latest updates on its biggest projects:

Grantham Southern Relief Road

The 293-metre bridge for the Grantham bypass is slowly being rolled into place, inch by inch.

Work started last week to carefully manoeuvre the structure over a river and railway line, with the team making sure it stays on track.

The project has been in progress since 2015, and it was announced last year that design faults had been discovered, which would cause further delays and an extra £10million to £20million in costs.

The final portion of the 3.5km relief road will be built once the bridge is in place, and it’s expected to finally be fully open in two years’ time.

Nettleham Road roundabout

Plans are being drawn up to improve Lincoln’s congested A46-A15 roundabout, including a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

The application is likely to be submitted in March or April.

If this is granted and the council is able to buy the relevant land quickly, works could begin as soon as late 2026 or early 2027.

North Hykeham Relief Road

Construction will officially start on the long-awaited project next week after more than a decade of planning.

The final phase of Lincoln’s ring road will connect the A46 and the Eastern bypass, and is expected to open in May 2029.

The government officially signed off on the plans last month following a long pause and last-minute disputes over who would pay for bat bridges.

Bailgate resurfacing

Works to repave the historic heart of Lincoln’s Cathedral quarter are over halfway complete.

Crews have now moved onto the second phase, between the Newport Arch and Westgate.

Lincolnshire County Council says that work has been slower than expected due to bad weather, meaning the final stretch between Newport and Newport Arch will be delayed until after Easter.

It says that early feedback from public and local businesses on the new look has been positive.

Yarborough Hill

Work to stabilise a slipping hillside in Lincoln will get underway in June.

The subsidence under Yarborough Hill could eventually lead to a road closure if not sorted, so plans have been agreed to reinforce it.

The council says the work could cause disruption, and has promised that as much as possible will take place in the neighbouring Whitton’s Park rather than the road itself.
