A period of potentially disruptive winter weather is expected across Nottinghamshire tonight and into Friday morning, with an amber Met Office weather warning in force for snow.
Tonight – Thursday evening and overnight
Conditions will deteriorate quickly during the evening, with precipitation becoming widespread from around 9pm onwards. The Met Office amber warning for snow comes into force at 8pm and runs through to 9am on Friday, highlighting the risk of significant snowfall and disruption.
Temperatures this evening will hover between 1°C and 2°C, falling only slightly overnight. However, with cold air in place at low levels and strong easterly to north-easterly winds, many forecasters suggest precipitation is increasingly likely to fall as snow rather than rain, particularly away from city centres and on higher ground.
Precipitation will be persistent through the late evening and overnight, with probabilities consistently above 90 to 95 per cent. Winds will strengthen from the east and north-east at 15 to 17 mph, with gusts reaching around 30 to 33 mph, leading to blowing snow and poor visibility in exposed areas. Feels-like temperatures will remain well below freezing, close to -4°C, increasing the risk of snow settling quickly on untreated surfaces.
While some forecast charts continue to suggest rain, the Met Office has stressed there is uncertainty around the exact rain-snow boundary, which is why the amber warning has been issued. Any shift in temperature by even a small margin could result in several hours of snow overnight.
Friday morning
Snow, sleet or a mix of wintry precipitation is expected to continue into the early hours of Friday, particularly between midnight and around 7am. Temperatures will remain around 1°C to 2°C, with feels-like values near -4°C due to persistent northerly winds of around 15 to 16 mph.
Precipitation chances remain very high through the morning, with further snowfall possible, especially during heavier bursts. Travel conditions may be difficult, with the risk of icy roads, reduced visibility and delays during the morning commute.
Friday afternoon and evening
Conditions are expected to slowly improve later on Friday. By late morning and into the afternoon, precipitation should become lighter and more intermittent, gradually easing from west to east. Temperatures will rise slightly to around 3°C to 4°C, helping to limit further snow accumulation, though any lying snow may be slow to thaw.

Winds will remain brisk from the north to north-north-west at around 12 to 14 mph, with gusts still reaching 25 to 30 mph earlier in the afternoon. By Friday evening, precipitation chances will continue to fall, with drier conditions developing and temperatures dipping back towards 2°C, increasing the risk of refreezing where surfaces remain wet or slushy.
