Pupils from St Peter’s school in Ruddington settle in at Jesse Gray school in West Bridgford

Following the closure of St Peter’s School in December because of structural issues, a number of neighbouring schools stepped in to accommodate the 350 pupils from St Peter’s School in Ruddington.

As well as Jesse Gray School, other schools supporting the St Peter’s pupils include James Peacock Infant School, Ruddington, Cotgrave Candleby Lane School and Millside Spencer Academy in East Leake.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, Councillor Stuart Matthews visited Jesse Gray recently to check on the new arrangements.

Councillor Matthews, a local Ruddington councillor, said: “It’s wonderful to see how well the pupils are getting on and I’m delighted that the children from St Peter’s are happy and settled.

“I’d also like to thank Jesse Gray headteacher Chris Belton and his staff for making the move so seamless, they have done a marvellous job.”

Cllr Matthews also praised county council staff for working tirelessly to make sure the school had hot meals within 24 hours of him making the request.

Headteachers from both schools agreed the new arrangements were working extremely well.

Chris said: “Everyone has adapted well to their new surroundings and we’re delighted to be helping a neighbouring school when they needed it.”

St Peter’s headteacher Michael Bradley added: “We’ve been welcomed with open arms and everyone is now just getting on with daily school life.
“The pupils are making new friends and amazing memories during their time here.”

Jesse Gray pupil Lucas Gilmore, 9, has enjoyed playing in the playground with his new friends and St Peter’s pupil Amelia Newcombe, 9, has enjoyed singing in assembly.

Urgent work to build a new temporary village to accommodate all 350 St Peter’s pupils is currently underway and will open in spring.
