A group of West Bridgford Junior School pupils have brought colour, creativity, and comfort to St George’s Medical Practice by designing and painting a vibrant animal-themed mural in the children’s waiting area.
The idea came from the Surgery’s Patient Participation Group (PPG), which wanted to improve the environment for young patients. Before the pandemic, the area featured toys to keep children occupied before their appointments. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, those toys were removed — leaving the space in need of a new, safe way to provide comfort and distraction.

PPG member Phil Unsworth, former headteacher at West Bridgford Junior School, reached out to the school to see if pupils might be interested in helping — and the result is a wonderful jungle mural filled with hidden animals, created by the children themselves. Thanks also go to Craig Martin and Laura Dix, their class teachers.

“The mural gives parents and carers a gentle way to help distract children who may be feeling unwell or nervous about their appointment,” said a spokesperson from the Patient Group. “It’s also a brilliant example of children supporting their own community — many of them will visit this Surgery themselves.”

The Surgery team is thrilled with the mural, which is already proving popular with visiting families. The Patient Group hopes this project not only brightens the experience for young patients but also shines a light on the important role PPGs play in supporting local surgeries and creating a bridge between patients and practice teams.
