Man jailed for breaching town centre anti-social behaviour injunction

A man banned from Worksop town centre has been jailed for 28 days by the Mansfield County Court after persistently breaching his Anti-Social Behaviour injunction.

Peter Downes, of no fixed address, was seen persistently drinking and being in possession of alcohol in the street, as well as using abusive language to council officers when challenged between February and May 2025.

The Court made Downes subject to the Anti-Social Behaviour injunction on 18th August 2025 which banned him from entering the town centre and surrounding areas.

Downes first breached this injunction on 27th August 2025, which led to him being sentenced to a 14 day period of imprisonment which was suspended for six months, provided he thereafter complied with the injunction.

A second breach in December 2025 was dismissed by the court after it was not possible to locate Downes to serve him the necessary legal papers.

Downes was further arrested on New Years Day 2026 as he was found walking on Bridge Street in Worksop, this is within the exclusion zone.

Downes admitted the breach at Nottingham County Court on 2nd January 2026, was found guilty of Contempt of Court, and was sentenced to 14 days in custody. The Judge also activated the suspended sentence, meaning Downes will serve 28 days immediate imprisonment.

Downes Anti-Social Behaviour injunction remains in force until 18th August 2027, meaning he may not enter Worksop Town Centre and will be arrested if seen in the exclusion area.

Cllr Darrell Pulk, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said: “We hope this custodial sentence provides a deterrent to prevent further breaches of this injunction.

“It also sends a strong message that action will be taken against the small minority of people who behave antisocially in our town centres.

“I would like to praise the work of our Anti-social behaviour team who work to reassure our residents and visitors alike that our public spaces are places that can be enjoyed free from antisocial behaviour.”
